THE POSITION Benefits Supplemental Questions

Under general supervision, perform semi-skilled and skilled labor in the construction, maintenance, and repair of airport facilities. Operate construction and maintenance equipment and power tools, dump truck, loader, backhoe, compressor, jack hammer, paint sprayer, sand-blaster, street sweeper, mower and concrete saw; maintain tools, equipment and vehicles. Perform a variety of field maintenance and repairs and maintain work records. Utilize standard safety practices and procedures, respond to a variety of field emergencies and perform repairs. Frame, hang and install doors, windows and cabinets; apply drywall and finish wood. Perform basic plumbing. Repair and maintain Airport sewer lift station; clean sewer lines, storm drains and waterways. Perform basic welding. Prepare and paint buildings street markings, signs and related items. Perform basic electrical repairs on power distribution centers, circuit breaker and control panels, parking lot lighting and street lights. Mix, rake and spread asphalt; seal cracks and patch asphalt. Service, repair and clean shop equipment and tools. Perform basic cost analysis and record keeping for assigned projects, including time, materials and equipment. Plan and conduct safety meetings, provide work assignment updates, monitor and log hazardous materials and conduct facility inspections. Note: Must be available for stand-by and occasional after-hours response for maintenance emergencies and/or aircraft accidents.

Note: Offers of employment may be made at the Airport Maintenance Worker I level ($41,357 - $50,270 Annually).

EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS:

Knowledge of: Installation, maintenance and repair procedures for structures, mechanical systems and utilities, including construction, electrical /electronic, plumbing, soldering, welding, roofing, painting, concrete, carpentry and asphalt work, grounds and custodial work. Occupational hazards and safe work practices. General construction principles, methods and techniques. Basic record keeping.

Ability to: Perform a variety of journey-level maintenance, construction and repair work. Operate a variety of mechanical tools and equipment. Perform manual labor for extended periods of time, occasionally in inclement weather and under emergency circumstances. Understand and follow written and oral instructions. Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing. Communicate with FAA air traffic control via radio to safely operate within the airfield environment. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work. Work independently in the absence of supervision.

Experience: Two years of experience in a building trade or performing general maintenance work is highly desirable.

License Requirements: Possession of a valid CA drivers' license. Must obtain Santa Barbara Airport AOA driving authorization allowing operation of vehicles and equipment on the active airfield within 6 months of appointment. Must qualify for and maintain personnel identification media authorizing access to all restricted areas of the Airport.

Physical Standards: Position requires frequent lifting/carrying of objects weighing up to 25 pounds and occasionally up to a maximum of 100 pounds; balancing, crouching, stooping, kneeling, reaching and handling, walking, standing, climbing, or sitting to operate power tools and equipment, and city vehicles for extended periods of time.

Job Conditions: Exposure to airfield environment and may require exposure to disagreeable conditions including mud, sand, dirt, grease, caustic chemicals, paint/gasoline fumes, equipment noise and vibration, inclement weather and dampness.
