Position: Transportation Technician (Fall Intern)

S&ME, Inc., an engineering and environmental services firm, is seeking a part-time Transportation Technician for the fall of 2017. This individual will perform technical duties associated with the oversight, administration and inspection of transportation projects, including roadway, bridge, rail, pedestrian, port, and /or aviation, to determine contractor's compliance with the contract, plans and specifications. Transportation Technicians observe and inspect various contractor's operations to include clearing and grubbing, earthmoving, paving, concrete pavement, bridge construction, pipe installation, traffic control, pavement marking, etc.

Other responsibilities include (but not limited to) materials sampling and testing at specific frequencies for compliance with the owners' quality assurance program; preparing material reports and daily diaries; preforming a variety of calculations, computations and documentation associated with the project inspection and material testing; inspecting erosion control devices for plan and permit compliance; verifying line and grade with survey equipment; preparing field books for contractor payment documentation; attending meetings; interacting with third party construction personnel; and performing DBE and EEO compliance surveys.

Transportation Technicians are subject to both inside and outside environmental conditions and to various types of weather and field conditions, including heights, uneven terrain, highway traffic, hazards of highway construction sites and heavy equipment, and may travel/work extended hours, weekends and/or holidays.

Qualifications:
  • Enrolled in an Associate's or Bachelor's program in Civil Engineering, Engineering Technology, Surveying Technology or a related degree program, required;
  • Ability to lift between 40-50 lbs.;
  • Willingness to work outdoors in varying weather conditions;
  • Math and technical writing skills;
  • At least 18 years of age.
